Missing a flight feels like a disaster. Usually it's a solvable problem — if you move fast and stay calm. Here's the order of operations.
First ten minutes
- Go straight to your airline's desk or app — don't leave the airport.
- Be polite. The agent has more discretion than the rules suggest, and calm travellers get more help.
- Ask about the next flight and whether you can be put on it.
Know where you stand
- Missed it due to a delay on their side? They usually rebook you free.
- Missed it on your own? Many airlines have a “flat tyre” rule and will put you on the next flight for a fee or free if you're within a couple of hours.
- Check your travel insurance — missed-connection cover is common.

Prevention
Arrive 2 hours early for domestic, 3 for international. For connections, avoid tight layovers under 60–90 minutes.
