Missing a flight feels like a disaster. Usually it's a solvable problem — if you move fast and stay calm. Here's the order of operations.

First ten minutes

  1. Go straight to your airline's desk or app — don't leave the airport.
  2. Be polite. The agent has more discretion than the rules suggest, and calm travellers get more help.
  3. Ask about the next flight and whether you can be put on it.

Know where you stand

  • Missed it due to a delay on their side? They usually rebook you free.
  • Missed it on your own? Many airlines have a “flat tyre” rule and will put you on the next flight for a fee or free if you're within a couple of hours.
  • Check your travel insurance — missed-connection cover is common.

Prevention

Arrive 2 hours early for domestic, 3 for international. For connections, avoid tight layovers under 60–90 minutes.
