When the power dies in part of your home, a tripped circuit breaker is usually the cause — and resetting it is simple and safe. A breaker trips on purpose, to protect you, so the real job is finding what overloaded it.

Important safety note

Reset it

  1. Find your consumer unit / fuse box (often by the front door, in a hallway, or a cupboard).
  2. Look for a switch that's flipped to the OFF or middle position while others are ON.
  3. Flip it fully OFF first, then back ON — a firm, complete switch.
  4. Power should return to that circuit.

Find out why it tripped

A breaker trips because a circuit was overloaded or something faulty is drawing too much current. Before resetting, unplug whatever was running when it went (a heater, a kettle, a faulty appliance).

When to stop and call an electrician

If it trips again immediately, keeps tripping, you smell burning, or see scorch marks — stop. Don't keep forcing it on. That's a fault that needs a qualified electrician.

When it trips again straight away

If the breaker won't stay on, or it flips again within seconds, stop resetting it. Repeatedly forcing a breaker back on doesn't fix anything and it wears the mechanism out. The breaker is doing its job, so the fault is downstream of it, not in the box.

Work through it in order:

  1. Unplug everything on that circuit, then reset. If it holds, you've got a faulty appliance. Plug items back in one at a time until it trips again, that's your culprit.
  2. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring or a fixed fixture (a light, an extractor fan, an outdoor socket that's let water in).
  3. A breaker that trips instantly and hard usually means a short circuit. That's the point to stop and call an electrician.

Don't tape it shut

If someone's ever wedged, taped, or held a breaker in the on position to stop it tripping, undo that now. You've disabled the one thing standing between a fault and a fire.

A worked example: the kettle and the toaster

Classic scenario. You put the kettle and the toaster on together and the kitchen sockets die. Nothing's broken, you've simply pulled more current through one circuit than it's rated for. The breaker tripped exactly as designed.

The fix takes two minutes: reset the breaker, then run high-draw appliances one at a time rather than together. Kettle, wait, then toaster. If a single appliance on its own trips the breaker every time, that one's faulty and needs looking at, not the circuit.

Time, cost and when it's not a DIY job

A straightforward reset costs nothing and takes under five minutes, torch included. Tracking down a nuisance-tripping appliance might take you twenty minutes of plugging and unplugging.

  • Call an electrician if: the breaker itself feels hot, smells of burning, or is scorched; it trips with everything unplugged; or it simply won't reset at all.
  • Booking a spark for a callout is typically a modest fixed fee for the visit, more if parts or rewiring are involved. Get the price before they start.
  • Never open the sealed part of the consumer unit or touch the main incoming fuse. That's the supplier's kit and it's genuinely dangerous.

Why does my breaker keep tripping at the same time every day?
Something on a timer is the usual answer. An immersion heater, storage heater, dishwasher or washing machine kicking in on a schedule can push a borderline circuit over its limit. Note what switches on at that time, then either move it to a different circuit or stop running it alongside other heavy loads.
Is it dangerous to reset a breaker myself?
Resetting one is safe and designed to be done by anyone, you're just flicking a switch on the outside of the box.
